Containment of the Palisades and Eaton fires grew, and a few residents have been allowed to return to their homes. But officials stress there is much work to be done.

All red flag warnings for critical fire danger expired by Thursday evening, bringing relief for firefighting work on two deadly blazes in Los Angeles County.

The Eaton fire, burning in Altadena, Pasadena and Sierra Madre, was 55% contained as of 6:30 a.m., according to Cal Fire. The Palisades fire, burning in Pacific Palisades, Malibu and Topanga and Mandeville Canyons, inched upward to 22% containment.

The number of confirmed deaths in the fires climbed to at least 27 after authorities said they found remains in the two major fire zones on Wednesday.

People impacted by the Palisades and Eaton fires can now search damage assessment maps for their home or other address. These maps are preliminary and will be updated daily as more areas are inspected, according to L.A. County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone.

Mandatory evacuations for more than 100,000 people remain in place for the wildfires, which started Jan. 7 amid a powerful windstorm that forecasters warned would be the worst the region has seen in more than a decade.

As dangerous winds subsided Wednesday, there was growing frustration among residents desperate to see what's left of their homes. But there’s a growing risk that significant fire weather could return in Los Angeles and Ventura counties starting early next week.

Cal Fire said at a Wednesday morning news conference that in the last 24 hours, there has been little to no growth in both fires.
