Church Street’s two middle blocks (between College and Cherry) were officially closed to traffic on July 7, 1980. The Church Street Marketplace opened on Sept. 15, 1981.

Out of the over 100 stores in the Church Street Marketplace, 75-percent of stores are locally owned, and only 25-percent are nationally owned.

Scott Corbin, leasing manager for Church Street Market, said he would like to see a “high-profile tenant” move into the Olive Garden space that spans Church Street in the elevated walkway.

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Over the past four decades, Church Street has been a focal point of Burlington’s downtown. According to the City, the marketplace sees nearly 1.5 million people each year.

Church Street Marketplace is a four-block long pedestrian district that is home to more than 100 stores, restaurants and other businesses.

The market, which is hosted by First United Methodist Church, 217 S. Church St., Salisbury began in the summer of 2024 as a mid-week market and will continue on that schedule again this year.

Bill Truex, a decorated architect, changed the face of Burlington by envisioning civic projects such as the Church Street Marketplace. Truex died on April 10. He was 85.
