J.J. Spaun received some help from above on his 64-foot, U.S. Open clinching-putt. Spaun’s caddie, Mark Carens, lost his father last year on Father’s Day. Carens’s father was named Eddie, and he was a presence during their triumph at Oakmont Country Club.

When sheets of rain descended upon Oakmont on Sunday afternoon and an army of groundskeepers started taking squeegees and towels to the fairways, a tumultuous finish and bizarre turn became inevitable at this U.

JJ Spaun triumphed at the U.S. Open at Oakmont after sinking an incredible putt on the 18th to beat Robert MacIntyre by two strokes.

On a day built for umbrellas, J.J. Spaun reversed his own free fall, took advantage of everyone else’s and hit two shots that turned him into a major champion.

Maybe, just maybe, anybody can win a U.S. Open. Including a 34-year-old PGA Tour journeyman counted out after nine holes.
