On Sunday, the eve of the College Football Playoff national championship game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the decision-makers who have the ultimate authority over the playoff's format will hold their annual business meeting.

Look around social media and you’ll see them starting to crop up — 2025 preseason college football rankings. Some combination of Texas, Georgia, Ohio State and Oregon rules the top 10, which is fine and reasonable except for the fact that the 2024 season isn’t even over yet.

While the expanded playoff has mostly been a success, changing the landscape of the sport and providing a path for the top teams in the sport to prove themselves across the course of a season, rather than be eliminated by losing one game in the regular season, it still has its flaws.
