Three wildfires broke out in quick succession overnight and into early Tuesday in northern San Diego County, California.

There are no evacuation orders in place now for the Eaton and Sepulveda Fires in LA County, the Clay Fire in Riverside County or the Laguna Fire in Ventura County. Evacuation orders were in place for areas near the Laguna Fire but have since been changed to evacuation warnings, according to Cal Fire.

Meteorologists said there was a chance the winds would be as severe as those that fueled the Palisades and Eaton fires, but that different locations would likely be affected.

The Santa Ana winds are dry, powerful winds that blow down the mountains toward the Southern California coast. The region sees about 10 Santa Ana wind events a year on average, typically occurring from fall into January. When conditions are dry, as they are right now, these winds can become a severe fire hazard.

Santa Ana winds return to Southern California from Monday to Tuesday, once again raising fire danger concerns.

The Santa Anas are expected to be most powerful Monday night into Tuesday. Fire services across the region say they are ready.

Satellite imagery has captured smoke billowing from wildfires south of the border, fueled by similar conditions to the devastating blazes in Los Angeles.

Firefighters made progress on the more than 10,000-acre Hughes Fire Friday, which sent thousands fleeing after sparking near the Los Angeles County community of Castaic a day earlier.

Another cold morning is expected Monday with temperatures near freezing and areas of frost in the Valley and Foothills.

“Despite being smack in the middle of the rainy season, brush conditions over Southern California are currently as dry as they ever get in the summer (the dry season),” AccuWeather California Expert Ken Clark said. “So when you throw dry air and Santa Ana winds into the mix, you have prime ingredients for wildfires.”
