Sylvester Turner, 70, died on March 5 at his home in Washington, D.C., from what his family described as “enduring health complications.”

Turner served as the 62nd mayor of Houston. He was elected to represent the 18th Congressional District of Texas in 2024, filling a seat formerly left by Sheila Jackson Lee, who died last year.

Mourners in Houston paid tribute to the late U.S. Rep. Sylvester Turner of Texas as he lay in state at city hall Tuesday, part of a week of public events to honor the Democratic lawmaker and former mayor.
