RotoBaller on MSNCasey Schmitt Departs After Being Hit by a Pitch
San Francisco Giants infielder Casey Schmitt was hit by a pitch in the elbow during his at-bat in the eighth inning of Friday's 7-6 loss to the Rays and was subsequently removed from the game. Tyler Fitzgerald replaced Schmitt in the lineup,
X-rays on Schmitt's forearm came back negative Friday, but he's expected to miss a couple of games with a right forearm contusion, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Schmitt was hit by a pitch during Friday's game against Tampa Bay and immediately left the contest.
In the first three innings Friday, the San Francisco Giants scored more runs than their previous five games combined, but they still fell to the Rays 7-6 to fall a season-worst four games under .500.
His slump has been just one factor in a team-wide offensive shortage over the last month, which has led to the Giants’ big slide down the standings.
The extent of Schmitt's injury is currently unknown, though he wasn't able to finish his at-bat after getting plunked by a 93-mph fastball. Their losing streak has hit six games. They’re 59-63 on the season. And they’ve now lost 14 of their last 15 games at home, something that hasn’t been done since 1901. Right-hander Landen Roupp pitched three-plus innings in his first start back from the injured list, allowing five earned runs and striking out five batters.
Casey Schmitt of the @SFGiants is the second MLB player to have at least 8 hits, 4 RBI and 4 runs scored over his first 3 career games (since RBI became an official stat in 1920).
