Mayoral front-runner Andrew Cuomo went on the offensive Wednesday following news that he’s under criminal investigation by President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice, rolling out a campaign ad blasting the probe as a nakedly political effort to disrupt his momentum in the race.
The DOJ launched an investigation into Cuomo alleging the New York mayoral candidate lied in a congressional hearing about decisions he made during the pandemic.
Cuomo is returning to politics with his run for mayor of New York City. He is the frontrunner to win the Democratic nomination. New York’s current mayor, Eric Adams, was elected as a Democrat but has become an ally of Trump and is running for reelection as an independent.
That office is headed up by former Fox News host Jeanine Pirro, a Cuomo critic who unsuccessfully ran against him for state attorney general in 2006. A spokesperson for Cuomo, who is running for New York City mayor, offered a searing statement saying the Democrat had not been notified of the probe.
Former NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo is under federal investigation for claims he lied to Congress about his role in a report on his COVID pandemic handling.
